Muğla

Stop for one night on the Izmir–Marmaris road: the old quarter and bazaar take half a day, and the coast resorts are the real draw.

Muğla is the provincial capital of the southern Aegean, set at 670 m on a hillside about an hour inland from Bodrum and Dalaman airports. Most travellers pass it on the D550 bypass; those who stop get a compact old town of 18th–19th century houses, a clocktower, an Ottoman bazaar and a handful of mosques, plus cooler air than the coast in July and August. It is a one-night stop or a half-day break, not a beach base.

Get around

The old centre is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes; leave the car at your hotel. Muttas runs the regional buses (lines to Milas–Bodrum airport, Dalaman, Marmaris and Bodrum town), and dolmuşes link the two otogars with the centre. Intercity coaches stop at Menteşe Otogarı, 4 km southwest on the D500.

Scams and watch-outs

  • The D550 bypass is fast and signed for Marmaris and Denizli: if you want the town, take the Menteşe exit, not the through road.
  • Some sights are closed without notice: the museum has been shut for a period, and the historic hamams are hard to find open. Check locally before walking.
  • Summer afternoons on the coast road are heavy with resort traffic; drive the Muğla–Bodrum or Muğla–Marmaris legs in the morning.
  • Carry small lira notes; small shops and dolmuşes may not break a ₺200 note.

Muğla is a quiet provincial capital and feels safe day and night; the practical risks are the winding unlit roads out to the villages, summer dehydration on the hillside, and unposted prices in a few bars: ask the total first.
