Much Wenlock
Give Much Wenlock one night, or a half-day stop between Shrewsbury and Ironbridge: the priory, the Guildhall and the Olympian trail fit in three hours on foot.
Much Wenlock is a small medieval market town of about 2,900 people in Shropshire, built around the ruins of a 12th-century Cluniac priory and the 16th-century Guildhall. It is also the birthplace of the modern Olympic movement: local doctor William Penny Brookes ran the Wenlock Olympian Games from 1850, and the town still holds them each July. Everything in the centre is walkable in a few hours, so the town works as a single overnight or a stop on the Shrewsbury-Ironbridge run rather than a base for a week.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes; the priory is a 5-minute walk from the High Street. There is no train station (the line closed in 1951). Buses run from Telford and Ironbridge; the nearest rail station is Telford Central. By car, the A458 links Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, and there are several pay-and-display car parks in town.

- Sunday parking is free in the Shropshire council car parks, but charging hours apply Monday to Saturday, 8am–6pm.
- Do not swim or enter Shadwell Quarry: the water and banks are unsafe.
- Wenlock Edge walks are on limestone paths that get slippery after rain; wear shoes with grip.
Much Wenlock is a low-crime town; the real risks are uneven pavements, slippery Edge paths and quarry water. Keep to lit streets at night and do not enter Shadwell Quarry.
