Mtwapa
Skip Mtwapa as a beach holiday; use it as a cheap 2-night base for the creek, Jumba ruins and nightlife, 15 km north of Mombasa.
Mtwapa is a working Kenyan town on the north coast, not a resort. It is 15 km north of Mombasa and about 91,000 people live here. Long-stay visitors come for cheap rent and warm winter sun; short-stay travellers come for the creek, the ruins and the bars. Beaches are 5–10 km away and the town itself is dusty and loud.

Get around
Boda-boda motorbike taxis cost about KES 25/km and tuk-tuks KES 50–75/km; ordinary taxis KES 50–100/km. Ride-hailing apps give a fixed fare before you ride and avoid the tourist markup. Matatus run to Mombasa centre for about KES 100. Car rental is KES 2,500–3,000 a day; hiring a driver with the car is worth it if left-hand driving and Mombasa traffic worry you.

Mtwapa is a normal Kenyan town with normal town crime: keep phones out of sight, use ride-hailing at night, and treat beach touts as salespeople. The bigger risks are road traffic, the tide and unprotected sex.
