Mozambique by month
Mozambique has one easy window and one to avoid. From May to November the south coast is dry and mild, the sea calms down, and humpback whales move up the channel from July. From January to March the cyclone belt sits over the Inhambane and Sofala coasts, dive boats stay in port and roads in the centre can wash out.

Which coast, which season
The country is long, so the best month depends on where you land. The deep south around Maputo and Ponta do Ouro is sub-tropical: warm winters, humid summers, and crowds that follow the South African school calendar in December and at Easter.
Inhambane and Bazaruto, covering Tofo, Barra, Vilankulo and the islands, is the diving heartland. May to October gives the clearest water; whale sharks and mantas are around year-round with a peak from October to March. Cyclones are a January to March problem.
Central Mozambique, including Beira and Gorongosa, is wettest in January and February and driest from June to October. Beira is one of the most cyclone-exposed cities on the coast. The far north around Ilha de Moçambique, Nampula and Pemba is hotter and more humid, and much of it sits under travel advisories: climate is not a reason to go there on its own.
The western interior is a different trip. Tete is one of the hottest towns in Africa in October and November, while highland nights near Lake Niassa turn cool in June and July.

Cost and crowds by season
Rates track the South African holiday calendar more than anything else. July, August and the second half of December are peak: lodges in Vilankulo, Tofo and Ponta do Ouro charge their highest rates and the good rooms go early. Book those dates months ahead.
February and March are the cheapest months because they are also the riskiest: cyclone season keeps boats ashore and some lodges close or run skeleton staff. April, May, October and November are the value window, with decent weather and mid-range prices.
Public holidays move domestic travel even in low season. Independence Day on 25 June brings parades in Maputo and closed offices; Family Day on 25 December is the big one for border traffic and beach bookings.

Weather and what to pack
Winter, roughly June to August, is the dry season in the south: mild days, cool evenings and little rain. Bring a light layer for boat trips and evenings, plus reef-safe sun protection, since the sun is strong even when the air is cool.
Summer, December to March, is hot and humid with heavy rain and cyclone risk. Pack quick-drying clothes, a rain shell and mosquito repellent; malaria precautions apply in much of the country year-round, so check current advice before you travel.
Shoulder months are the compromise: April still has some rain and a busy Easter weekend, November is hot and humid with turtles starting to nest in the south. Both are workable if you accept a shower or two.

How to decide
If whales and reliable diving are the point, aim for July to October and accept peak rates. If you want the same coast at lower cost, take late April, May or November and watch the forecast for early-season storms.
If your dates are fixed by school holidays, the southern beaches in December and at Easter will be busy and expensive but still workable; just book accommodation and transfers early. If you are flexible and want the cheapest trip, February and March undercut everything, provided you are willing to have plans cancelled by weather.
Whatever month you pick, keep the trip to one stretch of coast rather than trying to drive the length of the country, and check current security advice before booking the far north.

Practical notes
Domestic flights and long road transfers are the main cost and time sinks. Flying to Vilankulo for the Bazaruto Archipelago, or basing yourself in Maputo with a transfer to Tofo or Ponta do Ouro, beats trying to cover the coast overland.
Cyclones and heavy rain can close roads and cancel boats with little notice, especially January to March in the centre. Build a spare day into any itinerary that includes a liveaboard or island transfer, and keep travel insurance that covers weather disruption.
