Mountain View
Mountain View, California
Give Mountain View one full day plus a night: Castro Street, the Computer History Museum and the Google campus. Two nights if you add Shoreline Park or NASA Ames.
Mountain View is a mid-size Silicon Valley city of about 74,000 people, 45–60 min by Caltrain from San Francisco and 15 min from Palo Alto. It is the practical base for the Computer History Museum, the Googleplex and a walkable downtown on Castro Street. Sights sit 3–6 km apart, so plan on Caltrain, VTA light rail, a bike or a car rather than walking between them.

Get around
Caltrain links downtown Mountain View with San Francisco, Palo Alto, San Jose and Gilroy; VTA light rail (orange line) and buses cover the South Bay. Downtown Castro Street near the station is closed to cars and walkable. MVgo and the Mountain View Community Shuttle run limited free daytime buses. Coverage outside downtown is thin and infrequent, so use a bike (many bike lanes) or a car for the museum and Google campus.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Sights are spread out: the Computer History Museum and the Googleplex are 3–6 km from downtown, not a stroll.
- Most downtown restaurants close early; check hours before a late dinner.
- Shoreline Amphitheatre show nights jam Highway 101 and Shoreline Blvd — arrive early or take a rideshare.
- Summer afternoons inland run hot; carry water on the Stevens Creek Trail and Shoreline Park.
- Google does not run public office tours; the visitor centre and campus courtyard are the tourist-facing parts.
Mountain View is a low-crime, well-lit city and safe for tourists by day and night. The real annoyances are car break-ins in shopping and trailhead lots, fast traffic on El Camino Real, and summer heat on exposed trails.
