Mount Pearl
Skip as a base: Mount Pearl is a St. John's suburb 15 min from downtown. Stay in St. John's and come out only for the trails or Admiralty House.
Mount Pearl is Newfoundland's second city by population, but it is a residential and industrial suburb of St. John's, not a sightseeing town. Its real assets are 60+ km of walking trails, a Marconi-era museum and cheaper beds than downtown St. John's. Most travellers sleep in St. John's and use Mount Pearl for a half-day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Metrobus service is thin outside rush hour: check the last bus before you rely on it.
- Trails are unlit and icy from roughly November to April: spikes or skip.
- Fog and rain can close in fast on the coastal trails; carry a shell.
- Tipping is expected: 15–20% in restaurants, 10–15% in taxis.
Very safe by Canadian standards: the real risks are winter ice on the trails, thin bus service and fog on the coast road. 911 for anything urgent.
