Mount Gambier
Two nights is enough: one full day for the Blue Lake, Umpherston Sinkhole and a cave, one for the coast or Coonawarra. A car is close to essential.
Mount Gambier sits almost exactly midway between Adelaide and Melbourne, 450 km from each, and is the second-largest city in South Australia. It is built on a volcanic field: the Blue Lake fills a crater on the southern edge of town, the Umpherston Sinkhole is a sunken garden a few minutes from the centre, and the caves under the city are a diving destination. Most travellers pass through on the coastal route between the two capitals; two nights lets you see the crater lakes, one cave and either the coast at Port MacDonnell or the Coonawarra wine strip near Penola.

- Brownes Bay near Port MacDonnell is unpatrolled with no facilities, and small or low cars bog easily in the sand.
- Fill up before driving to Port MacDonnell: the only fuel there keeps business hours.
A small, quiet regional city; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dusk, unlit lake roads at night and unpatrolled surf. Park in lit car parks near the centre after dark.
