Mount Desert Island is one island with one big park: Acadia National Park covers roughly half of it, and the rest is a ring of small villages 10–25 minutes apart by car. Almost everyone sleeps in Bar Harbor, which is why it is the most expensive and most crowded option. Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor give you the same trails with fewer people and lower summer rates. You need a car or the seasonal Island Explorer bus; the island is not walkable end to end. Two to three nights covers the Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain and one or two hikes; four nights lets you add a boat, a bike ride and a quiet-side day.

- Summer is the season: mild days, cool nights, fog on the coast. Spring and fall are quieter and often clear; many services close from late October to mid-May.
Peak crowds run late June to early September, and October leaf season is a second spike. Book lodging well ahead for both.
