Moultonboro
Moultonborough
Go for 2–3 nights if you have a car and want a lake base; skip without wheels — the town is 11 mi of shoreline with almost no walkable centre.
Moultonboro is a low-density lake town on the north shore of Lake Winnipesaukee: a beach, a boat launch, two small mountains and a handful of seasonal restaurants strung along NH-25 and Moultonborough Neck Road. There is no village to wander. You come here to swim, boat and sleep, then drive 20–40 min for anything else. Two or three nights fills it; a week works only if you are renting a house on the water.

Get around
A car is effectively required: sights are 5–11 mi apart on two-lane roads with no sidewalk. Summer traffic backs up on NH-25, worst on Saturday 10:00–14:00 when rental weeks turn over. In winter, four-wheel drive is safer on dirt and private roads; the town plows private roads, but ice is common. Snowmobiles use the regional trail network and can cross the frozen lake. Moultonborough Police are known for ticketing out-of-state plates, so hold the posted limit.A car is effectively required: sights are 5–11 mi apart on two-lane roads with no sidewalk. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No walkable town centre: without a car you are stuck.
- Saturday 10:00–14:00 in Jul–Aug is the worst traffic window on NH-25.
- Many restaurants and rentals are seasonal; call before you drive in spring or fall.
- Winter dirt roads and driveways can need 4WD; ice is the real hazard.
- Speed limits are enforced closely, including on out-of-state plates.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the Neck and back roads.
Very safe for a US lake town; the real risks are water and road, not crime. Wear a life jacket on the lake, watch for ice in winter and hold the speed limit — local police ticket out-of-state plates.
