Motherwell is an industrial town 16 miles southeast of Glasgow, on the West Coast mainline, with trains from Glasgow Central every 15 minutes or so. Its sights are thin: a country park with a theme park, a red-brick cathedral and a small heritage centre. Most travellers pass through, or use it as a cheap bed for Glasgow and the Clyde Valley.

Get around
The centre is compact and walkable. Buses run along Muir Street to the railway station and shopping centre; bus 244 goes hourly to Dalzell Estate. You need a car or taxi for the theme park, as no bus serves it. Trains from Motherwell station reach Glasgow Central in 20–40 min.
