Mosta
Half a day is enough: see the Rotunda dome and the WWII shelter beneath it, then move on to Mdina or Valletta.
Mosta is a central Maltese town known for its Rotunda, the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, which has Europe's fourth-largest unsupported dome. The church survived a WWII bomb that pierced the dome but did not explode. The town itself is a residential hub with a lively square, but most travellers come for the church and the underground shelter, then continue to Mdina or Valletta.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A handshake; 'bonġu' or good morning; avoid: Assuming Malta is 'like Italy' or 'like Britain' — it is its own country
- Churches: Dress modestly and keep quiet; avoid: Flash photos during services
- Festas: Join the crowds and street food; avoid: Standing in front of the band or statue procession
- Politics: Listen; avoid: Taking sides between Labour and Nationalist supporters in public
- Driving: Expect sudden stops and narrow lanes; avoid: Road rage — it escalates fast
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking in the main street by the square is difficult in the afternoon; use side streets or the free lot near the Rotunda.
- The church may close for services; check the official site for visiting hours.
- The shelter tour is included with the church ticket but may have limited capacity; check if the shelter is open to visitors.
Mosta is a safe residential town. Watch for traffic on the main roads and keep an eye on your belongings in the square.
