Mossel Bay is a harbour town on the Garden Route, 40 km from George Airport and about 4 h 30 min by road from Cape Town. It works as a two-night stop between Cape Town and Knysna: a compact centre you can walk, a museum on the spot where Dias landed in 1488, and beaches that fill solid in December. It is a town for a stopover, not a week.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end. For Hartenbos, Dana Bay, Pinnacle Point or the airfield you need a car or a taxi; there is no useful local bus for visitors. Most people arrive on the N2 by car, which is also how you reach the rest of the Garden Route.

Scams and watch-outs
- Swim between the flags: the Indian Ocean here has rip currents and cold upwelling water.
- Do not leave bags visible in a parked car, and use attended parking at beaches and the Point.
- Book December accommodation months ahead; walk-in rates in peak season are high.
- The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe heritage train to Knysna has been suspended since 2006; check before planning around any rail trip.
The centre is fine on foot in daylight and busy at night along the restaurant strip. The real risks are rip currents, unguarded parking and the N2 after dark: drive it in daylight, keep bags out of sight and use attended lots.
