Moruya
Give Moruya one night as a South Coast stop between Batemans Bay and Narooma: river town, Saturday market, beaches at Moruya Heads. Skip it as a base for more than two nights.
Moruya is a small river town on the Princes Highway, the administrative centre of Eurobodalla Shire and about 30 minutes south of Batemans Bay. It works as a one-night pause on a coastal drive, with a Saturday market, a handful of pubs and the beach and breakwater at Moruya Heads a short drive east. Most travellers pass through; those who stay use it as a quieter, cheaper alternative to Batemans Bay.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Princes Highway and Kings Highway have difficult stretches and a high accident rate: drive in daylight and watch for wildlife at dusk.
- Moruya Heads beach is unpatrolled in places: swim between the flags at a patrolled beach.
- Book a hire car before you arrive; the airport has limited desks.
- Summer school holidays fill the coast: book beds ahead in Dec–Jan.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the highway, unpatrolled surf and wildlife on the road at dusk. Standard beach rules apply: swim between the flags.
