Morpeth
Give Morpeth one night, not three: the town itself is a half-day, then use it as a base for Northumberland with a car or the X15 bus.
Morpeth is a small market town on the River Wansbeck, 15–20 minutes by train from Newcastle and on the A1 for the drive north. Its own sights — the Chantry bagpipe museum, the clock tower, St Mary's churchyard — fill an afternoon. Its real value is as a quiet, cheaper base for Alnwick, the coast and Hadrian's Wall country, which needs wheels or buses.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. For anything outside town you need a car, a bike or the bus: X15 runs hourly to Newcastle (about 30 min) and north to Alnwick, and bus 35 runs every 20 min to Ashington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Trains from Morpeth station run about every 30 min to Newcastle and north toward Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh.
