Morocco's airports split into two jobs: long-haul gateways and regional arrivals. Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN) is the country's main international hub and the one most US and UK long-haul flights use. Marrakech Menara (RAK) and Fes–Saïss (FEZ) take a large share of European and low-cost traffic and sit close to the two medina cities most first trips are built around. Tangier Ibn Battouta (TNG) is the northern door, useful if you are coming from Spain or starting a north-to-south route.

The decision is really about your route. Land in Marrakech if you are heading to the High Atlas, Essaouira or the Sahara crossing that ends in Fes. Land in Fes if you are starting in the north, adding Chefchaouen, and finishing in Marrakech. Land in Casablanca if the fare or the nonstop is much better, then take the train; the parent guide's train line runs Tangier–Rabat–Casablanca–Marrakech, with Casablanca–Marrakech about 2.5–3 h and Marrakech–Fes about 7 h. Tangier works if you are arriving by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras, or flying in from a European city.

At CMN the train is the practical option for Casablanca city and for onward travel to Rabat and Marrakech. At RAK and FEZ you are relying on taxis or a transfer, and the drive is short. Agree the fare before you load bags, or insist on the meter; airport drivers are the classic place where the meter is 'forgotten'.

If you are connecting domestically, Royal Air Maroc and other carriers run flights between Casablanca and Marrakech, Fes, Tangier and the southern airports, which can save a long drive when your time is short. For most travellers, though, the train and coach network is cheaper and simpler than a domestic flight once you are on the ground.
