Morioka is the capital of Iwate and a Shinkansen junction where the Tokyo train splits for Akita and Shin-Hakodate. The city itself is walkable and small: a castle park, a river trail, a handful of museums and the 'three great noodles'. Most travellers use it as a stopover; one full day covers the centre, and a second night buys you a day trip to Kakunodate or Hanamaki.

Get around
The centre is walkable: the castle park is about a 30-minute walk from the station front, and underground tunnels under the bus station make the first stretch safer. The Den-Den-Mushi loop bus circles the centre via the castle park and bus centre for ¥100 a ride, roughly every 10 min in daytime. Outlying buses are infrequent; IC cards work on them.

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter pavements and the castle park paths are snowy and slippery; summer is hot and humid.
- The bus centre in front of the station is busy and confusing: buses come from several directions.
- The Tokyo overnight bus was suspended as of March 2024: check before planning on it.
- Some museums close for renewal or have limited English signage: check opening days before you go.
Morioka is a quiet, low-crime city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, summer heat, and the busy bus centre in front of the station.
