Morella
Give Morella one night, two if you want the walls and the castle without rushing: it is a walled hilltop town of 2,700, not a base for the coast.
Morella sits on a fortified hill at about 1,000 m in the inland north of Castellón province, roughly an hour west of Vinaròs on the N-232. The whole town is inside 2,500 m of medieval walls with fourteen towers, entered only through medieval gates, and cars stay outside. You come for the walls, the castle, the Gothic church and the food, not for a beach or a nightlife strip. Two nights lets you walk the wall at opening, eat a long lunch and still drive out to the aqueduct.

Get around
On foot. The town is small and steep; the walls, castle, church and town hall are all within about 15 minutes of each other. There is no useful local bus. Drive in only to drop bags, then park outside the walls.

- Parking inside the walls is severely limited: leave the car at the Porta de Sant Miquel car park or below the castle.
- The castle and convent close on some public holidays and keep special hours on Corpus Christi and St. Roc Day: check before you go.
- Castle exhibits are labelled in Spanish only.
- Summer afternoons are hot and the streets are exposed; walk the wall in the morning.
- Many small places take cash only or have a card minimum: carry some euros.
Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are steep, uneven streets, summer heat and ice in winter. Keep to the marked wall route and wear shoes with grip.
