Moonta
Give Moonta one full day for the Mines heritage area and Wheal Hughes mine tour, plus a beach afternoon; two nights if you want Port Hughes and the Cornish festival.
Moonta is a small Copper Coast town on the Yorke Peninsula, about two hours' drive from Adelaide via Port Wakefield. In its copper-mining peak it was South Australia's second-largest settlement after Adelaide. Today the draw is the Moonta Mines State Heritage Area, the underground Wheal Hughes mine tour, Cornish pasties, and calm swimming beaches at Moonta Bay and Port Hughes. It is a base for a peninsula loop, not a destination on its own.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Wheal Hughes mine tours need booking through the Moonta tourist office; no booking, no tour.
- Summer (Dec–Feb) can exceed 40°C; carry water and avoid midday walking at the mines.
- Fuel and groceries are limited after dark; fill up in Kadina or Moonta during the day.
- Coastal water is calm but cold outside summer; there are no patrolled surf beaches here.
Very safe for a small town; the real risks are summer heat, long unlit rural roads at dusk and wildlife on the highway. Lock the car at beach car parks and swim only where locals do.
