Montsoreau is a 454-person village on the Loire, listed among the most beautiful villages of France. Its one big sight is the Château de Montsoreau, the only Loire castle built in the riverbed, now a contemporary art museum holding the world's largest Art & Language collection. Everything else is the river, the quay, a Romanesque church and short hops to Fontevraud Abbey and Saumur. It is a one-night stop on a Loire drive or a base for two nights if you cycle Loire à Vélo.

Get around
The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. For Fontevraud, Turquant, Parnay, Souzay-Champigny and Saumur use the Saumur-Val de Loire agglomeration bus network; check the timetable before you rely on it, as service is thin on Sundays. Loire à Vélo runs through the village, and bikes can be hired locally. A car makes the châteaux and vineyards much easier.
