Montrose, Colorado
Montrose
Base in Montrose 2 nights with a car: one full day for Black Canyon of the Gunnison, one for the valley museums and wine. Without a car, skip it.
Montrose sits on the Uncompahgre Valley floor at about 1,770 m, the second-largest town in western Colorado and the practical base for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, 20 km east on US 50. It is also the northern gateway to the San Juan Mountains and the West Elks wine area, the highest vineyards in North America. Almost everything worth doing is outside town, so a car decides whether Montrose works for you.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: town is about 1,770 m and the canyon rim higher — drink water, ease off alcohol on day one.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms on the rim and in the San Juans; start hikes early.
- Long gaps between services east on US 50 and south on US 550: fill the tank in town.
- Winter driving over mountain passes can need chains or winter tyres; check road conditions before leaving.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the canyon and national forest.
Montrose is a low-crime small city and the usual risks are environmental: altitude, summer heat and lightning on the canyon rim, winter ice on the passes, and long empty drives between towns.
