Montreal in December: what to expect

Montreal sits in the Québec climate zone: deep snow and −20 °C spells in winter, with festival summers. December is the month the city commits to winter. Daytime highs hover around −2 °C and nights near −10 °C, but a single Arctic push can drop the daytime temperature to −20 °C for two or three days. Wind off the St Lawrence makes the feel colder than the number.

Precipitation arrives on roughly half the days of the month, and from mid-December most of it is snow — the city often has a lasting snow cover by Christmas. Daylight is short: about 8h45m at the start of the month and 8h40m at the solstice, so plan indoor stops for the 16:15 sunset. Freezing rain is possible in mild spells; check the forecast the morning you plan to drive.

The month splits in two. From 1 to about 20 December, Montreal is one of the cheapest big-city stays in Canada: hotel rates sit at their annual low outside New Year, museums and restaurants are uncrowded, and you can walk into most places without a reservation. From about 20 December to 2 January, school holidays and family visits fill hotels and push rates to their annual peak.

Airfares follow the same curve — the last week of December is the most expensive window of the year to fly into Montréal-Trudeau. If your dates are flexible, the first half of the month buys the same city for much less. Restaurants in the Plateau and Old Montreal book out for 24 and 31 December weeks ahead; reserve those two nights early or plan to cook in.

Montreal's December is built around Christmas markets and early ski days rather than one headline festival — the big winter event, the February carnival season, comes later. Confirm dates and hours before you go; listings change each year.

Indoors first. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the McCord Stewart Museum and the Pointe-à-Callière archaeology museum in Old Montreal are the standard cold-day circuit, and the underground pedestrian network links shops, metro stations and food courts without going outside. Old Montreal's stone streets and the Old Port are at their best under snow and lights — go early, when the light lasts.

For snow, head up. Mont-Royal is in the city and free; Mont-Tremblant and the smaller Laurentians hills are 1–1.5 hours by car and open for skiing from about early December, snow permitting. Pack for dry cold, not rain. A knee-length insulated coat, a hat that covers your ears, gloves or mittens, a scarf and insulated, waterproof boots with grip are the baseline; locals add long underwear and wool socks. A warm layer you can shed indoors matters, because museums, malls and the metro run hot.

Add a power adapter (Canada uses type A/B, 120 V), a portable charger for cold-weather battery drain, lip balm and moisturiser for dry indoor air, and sunglasses for snow glare.
