Day trip from Montreal to Quebec City: how to get there and what to do

Quebec City is about 250 km northeast of Montreal, and the trip is one of the easiest in Canada: a direct train, a direct bus, or a straightforward drive on Autoroute 20. The catch is the clock. Three hours each way leaves roughly seven to nine hours in the city, which is enough for the old town and not much else.

Do it as a day trip if your Montreal stay is short, if you mainly want to walk the ramparts, see Château Frontenac from the terrace and eat in Old Quebec, and if you are happy to start before 07:00. Stay overnight if you want the Musée de la civilisation, the Plains of Abraham in full, Île d'Orléans, or Montmorency Falls — all of those push past a single day.

The trip also works in winter, but daylight is short and cold snaps change the plan; check conditions before committing to the earliest train.

The train is the default for a day trip. VIA Rail runs direct services between Montreal's Gare Centrale and Quebec City's Gare du Palais, in the city centre, so you walk to the old town instead of paying for a taxi from the edge of town. Book ahead: the cheapest fares sell out, and a same-day walk-up ticket costs far more.

The bus is usually cheaper and slightly slower. Orléans Express runs from Montreal's Gare d'autocars de Montréal to Quebec City's Gare du Palais, with several departures a day. Seats are fine for three hours and luggage is included.

Driving gives you the most flexibility and the option to stop at Montmorency Falls or on Île d'Orléans on the way, but you pay for fuel, tolls on Autoroute 25 if you use it, and parking in Old Quebec, where spaces are limited and expensive. A car is only worth it if you are two or more people and want the stops.

Tours exist that bundle the coach with a guided walk, which suits travellers who do not want to plan the day. They cost more than the bus and lock you into a fixed schedule.

Take the earliest train you can and be on the ground before 10:00. Walk from Gare du Palais into Old Quebec — about 15 minutes uphill to the walls — and start with the ramparts and the terrace in front of Château Frontenac while the light is good and the crowds are thin.

Then go down to Quartier Petit Champlain for the lanes and the funicular back up, and have lunch in Old Quebec or on Rue Saint-Jean just outside the walls, where prices are lower. In the afternoon, walk the Plains of Abraham or take the short bus to the Musée de la civilisation if the weather turns. Leave the last hour free for the walk back to the station.

If you drive, use the middle of the day for Montmorency Falls or a short loop of Île d'Orléans and keep the old town for late afternoon.

A train day trip for one person lands around CAD 100–200 all in: the ticket, lunch, coffee and a museum if you add one. The bus version is closer to CAD 80–140. Driving is cheapest per person for a group of three or four once parking is split, but not for a solo traveller.

Prices are 2026 estimates. Train fares move a lot with how early you book, and weekend and holiday departures cost more than midweek ones.

Stay if you want more than the postcard. Two nights is the usual recommendation for Quebec City, which gives you the museums, the Plains of Abraham at an easy pace, a meal in the lower town, and a half-day out to Montmorency Falls or Île d'Orléans. Winter Carnival in February is its own reason to stay, and the city is at its best in June to October.

Go back the same day if Quebec City is a bonus stop on a short Montreal trip and you would rather keep the hotel bill down. The train ride is comfortable enough to sleep on, and you still get the old town at its best light.

If you do stay, book early for summer and for the Carnival period; the old town fills up and prices climb.
