Monticello is a town of about 1,700 people on the Pearl River in Lawrence County, south Mississippi. It was founded in 1798, briefly chosen as the state capital in 1821, and rebuilt after an 1882 tornado. There is no public transport and no intercity bus, so you need a car. The historic core is small and walkable; the two motels and the river park sit about a mile out. Most travellers pass through on US 84 or stop for an hour or two.

Get around
Car and foot only. The historic core around Broad Street is small and easy to walk. Atwood Water Park and the motels are each about a mile out, and the Pearl River bridge is not pedestrian-friendly, so drive those legs.
