Give Monticello one full day: Allerton Park in the morning, the railway museum and Courthouse Square in the afternoon. Sleep in Champaign or Decatur, not here.
Monticello is a small Piatt County seat of about 5,500 people, 25 minutes off Interstate 72 between Champaign and Decatur. Its one real draw is Robert Allerton Park, a 1,517-acre estate on the Sangamon River with formal gardens and sculpture. Add a weekend train ride at the railway museum and a walk past the old Pepsin Syrup mansions, and you have a half to full day. Lodging is thin, so most travellers base in Champaign-Urbana and drive over.
