Go for one night, or as a half-day stop between Welshpool and Newtown: the castle, the church and the lanes take 3–4 hours on foot.

Montgomery is a small Powys market town of about 1,300 people, once the county town of Montgomeryshire and now bypassed by the main roads. Georgian and early Victorian streets climb to a 1223 castle ruin, and Offa's Dyke Path passes just east of town. It is a base for quiet lanes and border country, not a sightseeing hub.

Get around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, but the climb to the castle and the war memorial is steep. For the surrounding lanes and Offa's Dyke Path you want a bike or a car; buses are infrequent.
