The honest verdict

Montevideo is compact and calm by the standards of the region. The old town is best in the daytime and empty at night, the market is at its best at a weekday lunch, and the river promenade runs for kilometres along the shore. Trips go wrong when the old town is walked at night, when the market is visited on a busy weekend, and when the ferry or airport timing is left to the last hour. Five clusters cover a first visit.

Paying: Cards are widely accepted; carry pesos in small notes for markets, small cafés and taxis. US dollars are accepted by some tourist businesses.
