The western suburbs are two municipalities: San Pedro Garza García, Mexico's wealthiest, all towers, malls and Michelin-starred kitchens, and working-class Santa Catarina, the gateway to La Huasteca climbing and the Cumbres national park. There is almost no sightseeing here, so you come for food, shopping and mountains, not for a city break.

No metro in the suburbs. Uber and taxis work well and are the default. From downtown Monterrey, take Metro to Cuauhtémoc then the green-and-white TransMetro bus into San Pedro; city buses 214, 106, 107 and 130 also run from el Centro. Cycling on the main roads is hazardous; Calzada del Valle closes to cars on Sundays 09:00–13:00.No metro in the suburbs. Uber and taxis work well and are the default. Scams and watch-outs
- Ride-hailing is cheaper and safer than street taxis at night; agree the fare if you do take a taxi.
- Chipinque and La Huasteca are real mountain terrain: heat, loose rock and unmarked trails; go with a guide if you are not experienced.
- The Via Ferrata at La Huasteca has killed inexperienced climbers.
- Black bears live in the Cumbres forests and are protected: do not approach or feed them.
- Mall parking uses app-based payment systems that are awkward for foreign cards.
San Pedro is one of Mexico's safest and wealthiest areas; Santa Catarina and the mountain parks are the real risk, from traffic, heat and unguided terrain rather than crime.
