Monterosso
Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso is the only Cinque Terre village with a proper beach and the most hotels. Stay here if you want a sandy base and easy train access; skip it for a quieter village if you don't need the beach.
Monterosso is the largest and most touristed of the five Cinque Terre villages, with a long sandy beach, the region's biggest hotel stock and the only station with direct trains to major cities. The old town is compact, the beach is busy by midday, and the coastal trail to Vernazza is the most popular hike in the park. Most travellers use it as a base for 1–2 nights or stop for a swim between hikes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Beach umbrellas and loungers cost €20–30 per day in summer (check).
- The trail to Vernazza may be closed after rain or for maintenance: check the park website before setting out.
- Last train from the other villages back to Monterosso is around 23:00; after that, a taxi costs about €30–50.
- Restaurants in the old town add a coperto (cover charge) of €2–3 per person.
Monterosso is safe. Watch for pickpockets on crowded trains and the beach. The main risks are sunburn, dehydration on hikes and slippery rocks on the trail.
