Montebello
One night is enough: see Manoir Papineau and the Château, then move on. Two nights only if you add a river or park day.
Montebello is a village of about 1,000 people on the Ottawa River, roughly an hour east of Ottawa and 1.5 hours west of Montreal on Autoroute 50. It is known for the Château Montebello, a 1930s log resort, and for Manoir Papineau, a Parks Canada national historic site. The village itself is walkable in 15 minutes; most visitors come for a night or as a stop between the two cities.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Manoir Papineau has an 800 m path from the parking lot to the manor; call ahead if you need mobility assistance.
- Some Parks Canada buildings close or run reduced hours outside summer; check before you drive out.
- Rockfest in mid-June brings about 200,000 people and sells out local beds: book months ahead or avoid that week.
- Winter driving on Autoroute 50 and Highway 148 can be icy; check road conditions.
A very safe small town. The real risks are winter driving on Autoroute 50 and Highway 148, ticks on riverside trails in summer, and Rockfest week when the village is packed.
