Treat Monschau as a day trip from Aachen: the cobbled old town is a 2–3 hour walk. Stay one night only if you plan to hike the Eifel trails.
Monschau is a small Eifel town of about 12,000 people, reached by bus from Aachen in roughly 70 minutes, with a cobbled half-timbered centre, a ruined castle and the Eifel National Park on the doorstep. The old town itself is small and walkable in a couple of hours, so most visitors come as a day trip; an overnight pays off only for hikers, cyclists and the Christmas market.
