Monnickendam
Go as a half-day stop or one night from Amsterdam: bus 115 takes about 25 min, the old centre walks in 90 min, and it is quieter than Edam or Volendam.
Monnickendam is a small former Zuiderzee port, 10,000 people, with city rights from 1355 and about 74 listed buildings in a centre you can cross in 15 minutes. It works as a low-key base for Waterland: boats, bikes, fish, and the bus back to Amsterdam in under half an hour. Most travellers see it in half a day; one night suits slow trips and boat days.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end; bikes are the better tool for the polders and are rented near Museum De Speeltoren and at Het Weeshuis. Canoes are rented at Het Weeshuis. Buses stop at the church or on the Bernardbrug side of town, both a short walk in.
