Mogo
Give Mogo half a day: the wildlife park in the morning, the historic village and a pie at lunch, then move on. Sleep here only if you want a quiet base near Batemans Bay.
Mogo is a one-street gold-rush village of about 320 people on the NSW South Coast, 10 km inland from Batemans Bay. Its draw is the wildlife park, which keeps red pandas and snow leopards, plus a short strip of cafés, galleries and pie shops. Most travellers see it as a stop between Batemans Bay and Moruya rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer bushfire risk is real on the South Coast: check the NSW RFS Fires Near Me app and local alerts before driving.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on back roads around Mogo; download offline maps.
- Wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, especially kangaroos and wombats.
- Many village shops close by mid-afternoon and some close early in winter: check before you drive out.
- The wildlife park is a dated-ticket attraction in busy periods: book ahead in school holidays.
Mogo is a small, low-crime village and feels safe day and night. The real risks are bushfire in summer, wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, and long gaps between fuel and phone signal.
