Mittagong
Give Mittagong one night as a Southern Highlands base or a Hume Motorway break; two nights only if you are doing the antique and garden circuit.
Mittagong is the first Southern Highlands town off the Hume Motorway, 110 km and about 90 minutes from Sydney, and a stop on the Southern Highlands train line. It is small: a main street of antique and second-hand shops, two historic pubs, a man-made lake and a lookout on Mount Gibraltar. Most visitors use it as a base for Bowral, Berrima and the villages around it, or as a break on the drive south.

Get around
A car is the practical way to see the area: roads to the lookouts and neighbouring towns are paved and parking is easy. The Southern Highlands Line links Mittagong with Bowral, Berrima-side villages and Sydney-side stations roughly hourly on weekdays and about every two hours at weekends, with a change at Campbelltown on most services. Weekday buses are limited and mostly school runs; they do not take Opal, so buy from the driver. Taxis run 24/7 but are pricey: even the short hop to Bowral is about A$20.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Weekend trains run about every two hours: check the timetable before you plan a day out.
- Regional NSW TrainLink services to and from Sydney must be booked in advance.
- Winter mornings are cold and frosty; the highlands sit above 600 m.
- The Mount Gibraltar picnic areas are worn and overgrown: go for the view, not the facilities.
- Book highlands accommodation ahead for spring and autumn weekends, when Sydney visitors fill the town.
Mittagong is a small, low-crime country town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are wildlife and unlit roads at dusk, cold wet weather in winter, and weekend trains that stop early: check the last service before an evening out.
