Mission Viejo
Skip Mission Viejo as a sightseeing base: 1 night only if you need a bed between LA and San Diego, and you need a car.
Mission Viejo is planned suburbia in south Orange County, halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego and 15 miles south of John Wayne Airport. There is no old town and no walkable core: six-lane roads, subdivisions and strip malls. Come for Lake Mission Viejo, a mall, the rodeo in late August, or a bed near I-5 — not for a city break. Most travellers do it as a half-day or one night while moving along the coast.

Get around
Rent a car. OCTA buses run through the city but are slow and infrequent for a visitor's day. Metrolink's Orange County and Inland Empire lines stop at Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo station (28200 Forbes Rd), with direct trains from LA Union Station and San Bernardino; from the station you still need a car, taxi or bus to reach anywhere in town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Almost nothing is walkable: plan every stop by car or rideshare.
- I-5 and the 241 toll road back up badly at weekday rush hour and on summer weekends.
- Lake Mission Viejo is a community lake; swimming, sailing, kayaking and fishing are listed, but visitor access rules are not confirmed — check before you go.
- Holy Jim Canyon access has been closed or gated at times after fire damage: check the Cleveland National Forest site before driving out.
Low street crime for a US suburb; the real risks are driving (I-5 speed and rush-hour congestion), summer inland heat on trails, and leaving bags visible in parked cars at trailheads and malls.
