Southwest, Minneapolis: neighborhood guide

Southwest Minneapolis is the residential half of the city's west side: low-rise apartment blocks and houses, a chain of lakes, and a handful of commercial streets where people actually shop. It covers Uptown, Lyn-Lake, the Wedge, Eat Street along Nicollet Avenue, Linden Hills and the Chain of Lakes, plus the Minneapolis part of the 50th & France district — most of which sits in Edina.

The street grid is easy once you know two rules. Streets run east–west and numbers rise as you go south; Nicollet Avenue divides east from west, so W 27th Street is west of Nicollet. Avenues run alphabetically west from Lyndale (Aldrich, Bryant, Colfax) and restart at A when the alphabet runs out. Addresses on avenues start from the nearest cross street, so 4000 France Avenue South sits at 40th Street.

This is a place to sleep and eat well, not a sightseeing district. Days here are lakes, bike paths, coffee and long dinners; downtown museums and stadiums are a short ride away.

Choose Southwest if your trip is about neighbourhood life: you want to walk to breakfast, rent a kayak or bike, and come back to a quiet street. Uptown and Lyn-Lake have the densest cluster of hotels, restaurants and bus routes, which makes them the easiest base without a car. Linden Hills and the 50th & France area are calmer, more residential and better with a car.

Skip Southwest if your priority is walking to downtown Minneapolis sights, the convention centre or a stadium event. Buses run frequently but take time, and late-night service thins out. If you are in town mainly for a game or a conference, Downtown or the North Loop will save you a daily commute.

Eat Street along Nicollet Avenue is the pick for food-focused stays: dozens of restaurants within a few blocks, with route 18 running the length of it.

Food is the strongest reason to base here. Eat Street on Nicollet Avenue packs Vietnamese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Thai and East African kitchens into a few blocks, mostly casual and mid-priced. Uptown and Lyn-Lake add brunch spots, bakeries, breweries and cocktail bars, and the density means you can eat well without planning far ahead.

Expect US prices: a casual main is roughly US$12–20 and a sit-down dinner US$20–35 before tax and tip (2026 estimate). Tipping of 18–22% is expected at sit-down restaurants. Reservations help on Friday and Saturday nights in Uptown and along 50th & France.

Metro Transit buses do the heavy lifting. Route 18 runs the full length of Nicollet Avenue through Eat Street; route 4 follows Lyndale Avenue from downtown to 50th Street via Lyn-Lake; route 6 runs Hennepin Avenue through Uptown and on toward 50th & France and Linden Hills; route 21 crosses on Lake Street to the Uptown Transit Station. Routes 2, 11, 17, 23, 46 and 612 fill in the rest.

By bike, the Midtown Greenway runs east–west one block north of Lake Street, grade-separated east of Hennepin, and links west to the Southwest LRT Trail toward St. Louis Park and Hopkins. The Kenilworth Trail runs north–south between Cedar Lake and Lake of the Isles, connecting the Cedar Lake Trail to downtown with the Greenway.

By car, I-35W borders the east side with exits at Lake/31st, 35th/36th, 46th, Diamond Lake Road and 60th; I-94 is to the northeast with a Lyndale/Hennepin exit; I-394 runs along the north edge. Fares, passes and schedules change — check Metro Transit before you travel.
