Mindanao is the second-largest island in the Philippines, about 98,000 km2, and it is not one destination. Western governments advise caution anywhere on Mindanao and all agree travellers should avoid Bangsamoro, Soccsksargen and Zamboanga Peninsula; most also suggest avoiding much of the rest, and most travel insurers will not pay a claim in the warned areas. The Philippine government says the advisories are overstated. Eastern and northern Mindanao — Davao, Siargao, Camiguin, Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro — see regular tourist traffic and foreign residents, but risk exists across the region, so check the current advisory for the exact provinces, confirm insurance, fly between cities rather than crossing the island by bus, and treat the warnings as a routing rule.

Do not plan a single overland run from Davao to Zamboanga City — it crosses warned provinces and takes the better part of two days.
