Millthorpe
Give Millthorpe one night, not a day trip: the village is small and walkable, and the point is dinner, a cellar door and a slow morning.
Millthorpe is a heritage-listed village of about 1,250 people in the Central West of New South Wales, roughly 30–40 minutes by car from Orange and 45–55 minutes from Bathurst. Two marked town walks, a small museum, a cellar door and a handful of cafés and a pub are the whole offer. It works as a quiet overnight stop on a Central West loop, or as a half-day detour if you are already in Orange or Blayney.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Dubbo XPT stops here only if you have booked: it is a request stop, so an unbooked traveller is left on the platform.
- Millthorpe Road to Blayney can be rough after heavy rain.
- Cellar door and café hours are short and vary by season: check before you drive out.
- Summer days can pass 35 °C with little shade on the walks.
A very safe small town; the real risks are wildlife on the roads at dusk, long drives after wine tasting, and heat on the walks in summer.
