Millersburg
Millersburg, Ohio
Stay 1–2 nights: Millersburg is a base for Amish-country back roads, not a sight list. Book a bed before you come — the county fills on fall weekends.
Millersburg is the county seat of Holmes County, about midway between Cleveland and Columbus, in the largest Amish settlement in the world. Nearly half the county's 44,000 people are Amish, and the draw is the countryside itself: farm stands, craft workshops, cheese houses and quiet roads shared with horse-drawn buggies. One night covers the town and a loop; two nights let you add Berlin, Kidron and Wooster without rushing. Costs are low by US standards, the area is safe, and the main risk is a car meeting a buggy on a blind hill.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Share the road with horse-drawn buggies: pass only on a clear straight, give them room, and slow down over hills.
- Many shops and restaurants close on Sunday, and some close on Monday too.
- Fall weekends (late Sep–Oct) fill lodging across the county: book weeks ahead.
- Cell signal is patchy on county roads; download offline maps before you leave town.
- Deer are active at dawn and dusk on rural roads.
Low-crime rural county and a safe small town; the real risks are driving — buggies, deer and blind hills on two-lane roads — plus heat in July and August.
