Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a glacier-carved fiord in Fiordland National Park, the only one reachable by road. It rains about 200 days a year and that is the point: the waterfalls only run in the wet. Almost everyone arrives by coach or car on the Milford Road, cruises for two hours, and leaves. The place rewards the people who stay the night.

Get around
There is no public transport inside the fiord. Walk between the visitor terminal, wharf and lodge (about 20–30 min on the rainforest track), or use the lodge's courtesy coach. Everything else is the road in and out.

Scams and watch-outs
- The Milford Road is a high alpine pass: ice Jun–Nov, avalanche risk, and closures at short notice. Check the road status before you leave Te Anau.
- Winter driving requires chains; there is a check point about 8 km north of Te Anau.
- Homer Tunnel is single-lane with traffic lights: expect a wait.
- Do not stop on sections marked with a red cross on a blue sign.
- Sandflies are aggressive: bring repellent.
- Fuel up in Te Anau; there is no fuel at Milford Sound.
The fiord itself is safe for tourists; the risk is the road. Ice, avalanche closures and single-lane tunnel waits are the real hazards, and there is no fuel, no hospital and almost no shelter at the sound.
