Miles
Stop for one night if you are driving the Warrego Highway: the Historical Village Museum plus a pub meal is a half-day, not a trip.
Miles is a small town of about 1,750 people on the Darling Downs, at the junction of the Warrego (A2) and Leichhardt (A5) highways. It is a road-trip stop between Brisbane, Toowoomba, Roma and Goondiwindi, not a destination in itself. One night covers the open-air museum, the main street and a pub; two nights only makes sense if you are breaking a long drive or waiting for the twice-weekly train.

Get around
The town core is flat and walkable, but it was laid out for cars and the highway shoulders are not pleasant on foot. Drive between the motels, the museum and the pubs; there is no local bus service.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: plan the museum for the morning and carry water.
- Kangaroos and cattle on the highway at dawn and dusk.
- Fuel and food options thin out west of town: fill up before you leave.
- The Westlander runs only twice a week in each direction: check days before you build a plan around it.
Miles is a quiet country town and personal safety is not a concern. The real risks are the highway (kangaroos, road trains, long empty stretches) and summer heat.
