Middlesbrough is a Teesside port at the north edge of North Yorkshire, grown from a 25-person hamlet in 1801 into an iron, steel and shipbuilding town. The industry has thinned out and the centre is compact and cheap, with two free museums, a football ground and a local dish worth the stop. Most travellers pass through on the train between York and Newcastle, or use it as a bed for the North York Moors and the coast.
