Skip as a base unless you need a cheap bed between Boston and Cape Cod: one night, or a half-day for Oliver Mill Park and a diner breakfast.

Middleborough is a rural town of about 24,000 in southeastern Massachusetts, 40 minutes by MBTA commuter rail from Boston and on the road to Cape Cod. There is no old-town core to wander: the draw is a colonial mill site, a herring run, lakes and golf in neighbouring Lakeville, and diners that open at 5:30am. Most travellers pass through on I-495 or US-44; a night here works if you want a cheaper bed and a train into Boston.

Get around

A car is the only practical way to see the sights: the mill park, lakes and golf courses sit 5–15 min apart with no useful bus. The MBTA Fall River/New Bedford line stops at Middleborough/Lakeville station (52 West Grove St) for Boston and for Fall River and New Bedford; parking is paid on weekdays. Cycling and walking paths exist but do not connect the main sights.
