The Mid West is the first real stop on the coastal run north from Perth: a Mediterranean coastal strip with Geraldton as its only large town, and a dry interior of small mining towns that most visitors never see. Treat it as a two- to three-night leg, not a destination in itself: Geraldton for the Monsignor Hawes churches, the foreshore and the museum, Kalbarri for the national park's river gorge and sea cliffs. You need a car. Fuel, food and beds thin out fast north of Geraldton.

Perth to Geraldton is a comfortable half-day drive; Perth to Kalbarri in one push is a long day, so break it.
North of Geraldton fuel, food and accommodation become sparse on the road towards Carnarvon.
Summer closes some Kalbarri trails at the height of the heat; plan walks for early morning.
Swimming: the main risk is boat traffic and big surf, not sharks. Use designated swimming areas and check for jellyfish.
