- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
- New South Wales ↗Bushfire season runs through summer: check the NSW Rural Fire Service before driving or hiking outside the city.
The Mid-North Coast runs about 300 km of Pacific shoreline in New South Wales, from Port Stephens north to Coffs Harbour, and inland to Dorrigo. It is a driving region: towns sit 30–90 minutes apart on the A1/M1, and the coast splits into three characters — lakes and sand dunes in the south, fishing towns in the middle, rainforest and rain in the north. Sleep in Port Macquarie for the southern half, Coffs Harbour for the northern half, and day-trip the rest.

- Coastal strip (Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour)
- Subtropical; summer (Dec–Feb) is humid with afternoon storms, winter (Jun–Aug) mild and drier. Sea temperatures stay swimmable most of the year.
- Inland ranges (Dorrigo, Gloucester Tops)
- Cooler and wetter than the coast; the Gloucester Tops and New England National Park fringes can see snow in winter, and gravel roads need care.
The northern part of the region, around Dorrigo and the Gondwana rainforests, rains often; pack for wet days year-round.
