Day trip from Miami to Key West: how to get there and what to do

Key West sits at the end of a 180 km chain of islands reached by a single road, US-1, which becomes the Overseas Highway south of Florida City. From central Miami that is roughly 260 km and 3.5–4.5 hours each way in normal traffic.
