Mexico's main gateways sit in different regions, so the airport choice is really a route choice. Pick the airport closest to your first three or four nights, then fly or take a first-class bus between regions rather than backtracking to the capital.
Mexico City International (MEX) is the busiest and best connected, with the widest choice of domestic flights. Felipe Ángeles (NLU) is about 45 km north of the centre and carries more domestic and low-cost flights. Both serve the capital, so check the three-letter code on your booking before you arrange a transfer.
Cancún (CUN) is the gateway to the Caribbean coast: ADO buses and the Tren Maya run to Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Mérida (MID) is a calmer entry for the Yucatán, 20–30 minutes from the centre. Guadalajara (GDL) covers western Mexico and Pacific connections, and Oaxaca (OAX) is about 30 minutes from the centre by shared or private airport taxi.

Tips
Book the airport that matches your first region. Flying into Cancún for a Oaxaca trip, or into Mexico City for a Tulum beach week, adds a domestic flight or a long bus leg on day one.
At MEX, use the authorised taxi counters inside the terminal or a ride-hailing app rather than accepting a lift from someone approaching you in arrivals. Uber, DiDi and Cabify are widely used in Mexico City and priced upfront, but pick-up points at some airports are restricted and ride-hailing is blocked in parts of Cancún and Tulum by taxi unions.
For the Yucatán, compare the Tren Maya and ADO buses against a domestic flight before you commit: the train is comfortable but some legs run only a few trains a day, and stations are often far from town centres. Buy ADO tickets on the app or at the terminal.
