Mexico City in May: what to expect

May is the last dry-ish month before the highland rainy season. Mornings are usually clear and warm, afternoons build cloud, and from roughly the last ten days showers arrive more often. Rain tends to fall in a short, heavy burst rather than all day, so a morning start still gets you the best light and the clearest views.

Nights stay cool enough for a light jacket, and the altitude (about 2,240 m) means sun feels stronger than the temperature suggests. UV is high year-round here; May is no exception.

Crowds drop after Semana Santa and Easter week in April, so May is one of the better-value months in the first half of the year. Hotel rates ease from the spring peak, though the 1 May holiday weekend and the 5 May (Cinco de Mayo) date bring short domestic spikes — 5 May is a bigger event in Puebla than in Mexico City.

Museums and the big sites are busiest on weekends and on the first Sunday of the month, when many national museums waive entry for Mexican residents. Go on a weekday morning if you want quieter rooms and shorter queues.

1 May is Labour Day, a public holiday: banks and some offices close, and museums may run reduced hours — check before you plan a big museum day.

5 May marks the 1862 Battle of Puebla. It is a modest date in Mexico City itself and a much larger one in Puebla, about two hours away by bus. Confirm any parade or event dates locally, as they shift year to year.

Use the clear mornings for anything outdoors: the pyramids at Teotihuacán, the canals at Xochimilco, the archaeology rooms and gardens at Chapultepec, and the walkable centre around the Zócalo. Save indoor stops — the museums in Chapultepec and Coyoacán, the murals downtown — for the afternoons when cloud builds.

If the smog is heavy, head uphill and out of the basin: the Desierto de los Leones and the pine country toward the volcanoes usually have cleaner air. For a longer escape, Puebla is an easy day trip and pairs with the 5 May date.

Pack for warm days and cool nights: light layers, a compact rain shell or umbrella for the late-month showers, high-factor sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Comfortable shoes matter — the altitude and the walking add up. A refillable bottle helps, and a light scarf or long-sleeve shirt is useful for strong sun and for churches.

April is hotter and drier but busier and pricier because of Semana Santa. June brings the rainy season properly, with more reliable afternoon storms but lower prices and thinner crowds. March is dry and mild, with jacarandas in bloom and spring-break crowds on the coasts rather than in the capital.
