Mexico City in December: what to expect

December is one of the two busiest months in Mexico City, and the pressure is concentrated in the second half. The first ten days are relatively calm; from around 12 December, when pilgrims arrive for the Guadalupe feast, through Christmas, New Year and the first days of January, the centre, Zócalo, markets and major museums fill up.

Hotel rates follow the same curve. Expect the highest prices of the year for the 20 December–2 January window, with the best-value dates in the first week of December and after about 6 January. Domestic travellers book months ahead, so late planners pay more or end up outside the centre.

The month's events are mostly religious and family-centred, and they shape how the city moves. Posadas — neighbourhood processions re-enacting the search for lodging — run from 16 to 24 December, with candles, songs and ponche (hot fruit punch). On 12 December, the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe draws enormous pilgrimages to the Basílica de Guadalupe in the north of the city; roads around it are congested and the area is extremely crowded.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (24–25 December) are quiet for shopping and many restaurants, which close or run limited hours, while family gatherings dominate. New Year's Eve centres on the Zócalo and neighbourhood parties. Check exact dates and any ticketing for concerts and special museum programmes, as they change each year.

Dry, clear weather makes December a strong month for the city's outdoor sights. The archaeological site and pyramids at Teotihuacán, the canals and gardens of Xochimilco, and the parks and markets of Coyoacán are all more comfortable now than in the rainy or smoggy months. The same goes for walking neighbourhoods like Roma, Condesa and the historic centre.

Museums — Anthropology, Tamayo, Soumaya, Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul — are ideal in the cold mornings and remain the best rainy-day-free option when holiday crowds build. Book timed tickets for the most popular ones and go early. For a day out of the city, Puebla and the volcanoes are within reach, but check holiday transport schedules.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a warm jacket or fleece for mornings and evenings, and lighter layers for the mild, sunny afternoons. A hat and high-factor sunscreen matter at this altitude even in December, and comfortable walking shoes are essential on the city's uneven pavements and archaeological sites.

Add a refillable water bottle, a small daypack, and a scarf or buff for cold, dusty evenings. If you plan to attend posadas or evening events, a slightly smarter layer helps; nights outdoors get genuinely cold.

November is similar but slightly warmer and less crowded, with Día de Muertos at the start — book Oaxaca and Pátzcuaro months ahead if you want that. January stays dry and clear with the same cold nights, and crowds thin after the first week, which often makes it better value than December.

February is dry, warm and busy, with the best air-quality window closing as the smog season approaches. If your priority is weather rather than festivals, late January and February are the sweet spot; if you want the holiday atmosphere, December delivers it at peak prices.

Yes, for most travellers. December offers the driest, clearest weather of the year in Mexico City, with comfortable days and reliable sunshine. The trade-offs are cold nights and the holiday crowds and prices from mid-month onward.

If you dislike crowds or want lower rates, aim for the first week of December or wait until after about 6 January. If you want the posadas, Guadalupe pilgrimage and New Year atmosphere, December is the month to come — just book lodging and key museum tickets well in advance.
