Go for 1–2 nights as a border stop or a food trip: La Chinesca Chinese-Mexican food, baseball, and winter desert weather. Skip Jun–Sep, when highs hit 41–43°C.
Mexicali is the capital of Baja California, sitting directly across the border from Calexico, California, and about 2 hours from San Diego by car. It is a business and industry city with one of Mexico's largest Chinese communities, whose historic neighbourhood, La Chinesca, is the main reason to stop. Summer heat is extreme; winter is mild and dry. Most travellers use it as a border crossing, a food stop, or a base for San Felipe and the Valle de Mexicali.

Get around
Taxis are abundant: sitio taxis are called in advance and take you anywhere, ruta taxis run fixed routes like buses. City buses range from old converted school buses to air-conditioned metrobuses. Distances are long and summer heat is severe, so most visitors use taxis or drive.

Mexicali is generally safer than Tijuana or Ciudad Juárez, but it is a working border city: stay in the centre and commercial districts at night, use sitio taxis, and keep valuables out of sight. The bigger everyday risk is summer heat, not crime.
