Merseburg

Merseburg is a 1,000-year-old cathedral town on the Saale, 15 km from Halle and 10 minutes away by half-hourly local train. The old town was largely destroyed in the 20th century, so the visit is one compact cluster: cathedral, episcopal palace, palace garden, market square. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Halle; a night makes sense if you are working through the Saale-Unstrut wine country by train.

The centre is small enough to walk. Local trains from Halle run about every 30 minutes and take 10 minutes. The long-distance tram line from Halle to Bad Dürrenberg passes through Merseburg, but a Saale bridge problem has been interrupting it, with buses replacing part of the route: check before you rely on it.
